Had so much fun with this. Cleverly channels the spirit of the Universal Monster era complete with spooky Japanese mansion and creepy music before surprisingly shifting into colour with more fluid momentum despite taking place further in the past. The runtime is brisk which means there's no waste. A guy snaps and murders over a boardgame (who hasn't been there?) and kicks off the revenge story. A woman prays to a cat to lick her blood and imbibe her hatred. Not much more you can ask for. The movie still keeps a few tricks up its sleeve towards the end when it introduces the haunting and the cat demon on the poster. There is even some kind of puppetry string power the cat-ghost has which makes those scenes feel theatrical and overemphasized in a good way. The main criticism is the end and the way it flashes forward several times which simply results in an abrupt and truncated ending. But a part of me finds it charming, as it does play in line with the aforementioned 30s horror films of old. Overall, a great watch.
