This movie is cliche as hell, but that’s not necessarily a bad thing. With how Iron Man 1 ends, there’s enough ambiguity to leave room for a sequel while still wrapping up the story enough that one isn’t really needed, so I’m always surprised when I remember that Marvel chose to do it only 2 films later. I digress, though, because Iron Man 2 is certainly a guilty pleasure of mine. I don’t love it, in fact I’d say it’s incredibly weak compared to its predecessor, but damn if I’m not thoroughly entertained the whole way through. For every flaw I can think of, there’s a positive in the same field: the action scenes don’t hit as hard as they do in 1, but they’re still incredibly shot and Black Widow taking out the guards is maybe one of the best scenes of the MCU; the romance is brought to the front and center in a pretty groanworthy way compared to how 1 went for it, but it’s still engaging enough to make me care about Iron Man and who he’ll end up with. I think I’ve established that I much prefer 1, but that doesn’t make this a bad sequel at all, it’s an average movie with lots of good writing that simply doesn’t live up to 1, and that’s alright, it never had to
