There aren’t enough words to express how much justice this does to Louis Armstrong’s legacy. It is overabundant with history, archived footage and audio logs. I was impressed with how much open access the crew had to this information- it feels like a rarity. His self-awareness of his stature is incredible when you realize all of the journals and audio logs he left behind for when his story was to be told. Don’t be surprised with the depth of politics and accepting his position in the African American culture- this man was incredibly bright and it’s pretty damn powerful. It also doesn’t have an angle to persuade the viewer since, well, these are already recorded and (almost) everyone speaking is dead; it’s just piecing his life together. You’ll walk away appreciating the beautiful art of jazz more than ever. This is the most mesmerizing and easy to watch documentaries of the year.
