First time watching one of these British dark comedies from Pegg, and I was pleasantly surprised, full of character and some wicked scenes to pair.
First the comedy was not the star in my opinion. I know I am not a fan of this type of humor but it didn’t totally ruin the tone or character for me. While some jokes did hit the rest just made for boring scenes but all around the comedy tone was there.
The big star of this movie is almost impossible to comprehend, extremely hard to explain but I will try. This movie is able to literally put you into this world and effectively show you everything about Jack and make you almost live through him. I can’t recall the exact details of how but theres just something about all of his solo scenes, they just really resonated with me on a deep level. I don’t even relate to his themes but the directing and writing made for such an entrancing experience and for a horror comedy it was super shocking this was the takeaway but here we are.
And I liked Jack’s character just as much, his paranoia theme is the heartbeat of the first 2 acts and is conveyed masterfully, the shots make for excellent tension and decent scares just enough to make you nervous. It also setup a simple but well thought backstory for him, and even though it gets a little lost at the end for convenience I enjoyed in anyway.
And you know the animation thrilled me, I am an absolute freak for stop motion and even though it hardly belongs and is few and far between it is there and I love it.
I literally stumbled upon this movie, it has very little watches and I see why, this may open the door to Pegg’s others like this but for now one British movie is good for the week.
