For the first time I really have no idea how to rate a film, did I enjoy it? Yes. Did it effectively worked on me like it wanted too? Yes. Is the performances bad? Nope but is it good? I really have no idea. The story is complex and emotionally and sexually charged, it reminds me of another Isabelle Huppert film The Piano Teacher but unlike that film Elle I feel is not as subtle as that film in how it handles its themes but it certainly is more provoking throughout for good and bad reasons. It is definitely on the overly to long side of things, with a runtime of 130 minutes it feels both too long yet too rushed. The story has a lot going for it but I feel some contemplation and breathing ground could really help it but at the sametime the story and its structure Is both effective yet a bit of a mess. The direction from Paul Verhoeven is alright, it's not memorable or bold but the cinematography is kinda nice and the costumes department definitely steals the show here on a techical level, just look at Huppert's wardrobe in this film! Speaking of Huppert she is undoubtedly the highlight, her performance here is as brave and commanding as ever, she has this strange and unique ability to both be extremely vulnerable yet in control at the sametime and that definitely helps the film a lot in the long run. The other actors are also fine but its Huppert yet again that steals the show. If judge solely on Huppert, she's why we are here and she certainly delivers! Overall that's Elle. I think I'll rewatch this sooner then any other film I've seen and want to rewatch in the past. There is a lot underneath 100% and the film is both a compelling and intriguing little character study while at the sametime being a pretty poor thriller drama due to its pace but then again I have no idea how to judge this thing. Is it good? Yes. Is it bad? Maybe. I don't know. Atleast I can say that I didn't feel robbed of two hours atleast if that's anything for you and of course if you are a Isabelle Huppert fan this you should atleast give one watch especially if you like The Piano Teacher or the Ceremony, it's got those two films' vibes but a lot more modern and more frustrating. At the very least for what it is I still admire its originality and daringness (especially in today's film world and) in how it approaches its themes even if it sometimes work like gold while other time feels flat and a little uninteresting but then again like I said once before, Elle is a real interesting film to judge as a viewer and to look at critically as a reviewer. I still see more good then bad with this one so 4 stars it is.
