my favorite installment of the shaw brothers journey to the west series so far. using less amount of sets compared to the first two yet evokes more exciting themes and occurrences. the blend of action and musical chinese opera is unmatched as it works quite brilliantly. the production design never fails to impress me but honestly i think the costume design is the stand out for this film. actually the subjects give more depth to the environment which usually in these films it’s the world building with the depth.
a film centered around deception and personal connection. constantly switching back and forth with who’s real and who’s the fake. it begins a whole testament on how no matter how long you know person, it doesn’t mean you know them. and this centers around characters that are hundreds of years old and they can’t differentiate their own sisters which is funny to me. i love how silly and full of life this is because even with experience, the writing lets all kinds of flaws come in.
