Functions well enough as a very young kid's movie, but misses much of the special pizzazz we'd see in Tamiya's next movie, GO GET THEM 0011!!. You could watch this without subtitles and still get it. To its credit, it doesn't pull punches. People are incinerated early in the beginning. On top of that, the protagonist kid's, Isamu, entire adventure takes place while his parents think he may be dead, cuts to them searching or weeping included.
I think this would have easily shifted into gear had they introduced Isamu's combat skills early on. For the most part, he's just an adventuring kid with a cheetah. Near the end, when they escape from jail, Isamu busts out some kind of signature high kick. It's pretty cool. From then on, he takes on a more combative nature, fighting and brawling. There's an added level of dynamism when Isamu's kicking butt.
