I'm sorry but this episode was a whole load of nothing burger. Pacing was pretty bad, with the Daleks only becoming a big threat in the last two episodes, and us not even seeing the army that was built come out before being defeated. Not a very good starter for the 2nd Doctor, especially as an animated episode, really hope we get some recovered episodes of this serial in light of the recent Daleks Master plan recoveries.
This was the origin of the Dalek tea waiters! Love the reference in NuWho's Victory of the Daleks. It's silly how Daleks can blast through "2 inches of tungsten" but not through the door the Doctor was hiding in. What I did really enjoy about the episode was seeing the mass construction of Daleks. It was funny how they just had a fishtank full of mutated Kaleds to shove into the metal casings 😭. It got me wondering how Daleks construct everything with such limited mobility, but they have factories built with races they enslave and also many different Dalek roles with unique arm attatchments to the required jobs.
Patrick Troughton had arguably the hardest role to follow as the doctor, as he had to sell the original concept of regeneration. I appreciate his first serial being a Dalek episode, to show he is still the same doctor we grew to love and retains all the past memories of fighting the Daleks.
In conclusion, pretty mid episode. Hoping to see more live action Troughton.
