I did not really like the beginning of the movie. I am not sure why, but it irritated me. However, as the story progressed, the film started to grow on me and I enjoyed it more and more. It definitely got better in my eyes as the plot developed. I think it is quite an okay film overall. I really like the actress Geena Davis.

It’s got that sheen of 90s screwball/romantic adjacent comedies. Critique of the media as bloodthirsty and narrative-oriented? Check. Some cynicism about human morality that culminates in the idea we’re all good deep inside? Check. Sweeping orchestral music more fit for a war film? Check. It doesn’t break the mold but there’s some fun performances and it’s almost nostalgic in a way. It’s also weirdly postmodern and skeptical of truth in an interesting way?

What does it mean to be a hero? Is it a lifelong of do gooding, or is it one heroic action that saves dozens of lives? Dustin Hoffman plays a sleazy swindler approaching jail time. When visiting his son, a plane crashes right in front of him, he begrudgingly intervened, but as a result he saved the lives of dozens. Not wanting attention, he leaves, media covering it as a missing hero among us. Hoffman ends up behind bars, as there is a million dollar claim for the identity of this hero. The one friend Hoffman told, a homeless, honest, dogooder tells a lie in order to get out of poverty saying he saved the passengers of the plane. Hoffman’s character reminds me of Adam Sandler in Uncut Gems but in this he is a bit more virtuous. So much confusion could have been avoided in the plot if Hoffman had a chance to explain himself, but for some reason, everyone cut him off while he tried to explain.
