An emotional and melancholic true story about the inhumanity of Nazi Germany, but more so about human relations and the power of compassion and, as corny as it is, love.
Incredibly well-acted: at times I had to remind myself that this is just a film and not a documentary with real footage. Liv Lisa Fries is an acting powerhouse.
The use of cool tones to represent imprisonment and warm tones to show Hilde’s (Fries) life was a touch I loved. Done a million times before, but nevertheless I still appreciate it.
I do think this film could have been shorter, but every scene still felt important, even in the smallest of ways.
It’s a sensitive, and admittedly sometimes boring, film filled with humanity. It’s not perfect, but it’s definitely worth a watch if the complexity of humans and the quiet fight for good is your thing.
