I will solely be reviewing the movie portion, the music is fine. It’s Metallica music if you’ve listened to them you’ve likely heard this album. I was honestly expecting video footage like you would see at their concerts but it was not that.
I really don’t know how to describe a lot of it, my favorite ones were probably the ‘music video’ for Lux Æterna and also the scrolling animation one. The rest were pretty…meh. The worst was that strange black and white seizure inducing light show dear christ my eyes. I would not really call these music videos in a lot of the traditional sense. Everything felt like very abstract shots intercut with footage of the band playing in the desert or on an empty set.
The other half of this was strange groupings of animations. There was no cohesive theme or overall image to any of these. They all felt different, like one just looked like an animated topographical map over some tree footage. One animation reminded me of the game of thrones intro and thats the best way I could describe it.
In between the music was just footage of post-digital black and white Metallica talking about the songs like they didn’t know what to say. They’re musicians i’m not expecting them to be eloquent but it was probably best left out of the film all-together It doesn’t add much and the director probably just thought it was a neat idea to pad runtime.
This was mostly just a gift to my dad, long time metallica fan and he had a good time so. Also if you read this far. Sorry.
