the biggest problem with this movie is that it does not know what it wants to be. anirudh cooked though so🙏🔥✍🏾
i mean imagine if this was a buddy-cop movie, or better yet, a buddy-investigator movie with Rajini and Amitabh, good-cop bad-cop esque. imagine the director stuck to his strengths and made it all a journalistic story, and fully grounded it. all i can do is imagine. they literally had all the ingredients to make this amazing, but instead undercooked it heavily.
there's really two movies going on here. there's the Rajini movie, and the Amitabh movie. there's the mass commercial movie that sells tickets which Rajini demands from his directors, and there's a serious, grounded, investigative journalism piece. and the movie just mixes this up horrendously. like there's a couple of awesome commerical sequences. there's a couple of great investigative scenes. but as a movie? this does not flow at all. it's less so just BAD but more so just two completely different movies fighting each other the whole way through.
initially I really hated the excessive repetition of Rajini's dialogue, but it did pay off in the end. some of the other dialogue and things that take place are just a bit goofy though and becomes kind of a cringefest for a lot of the runtime.
also Fahadh Faasil? i am so lost. what purpose did he even serve? why was everyone saying he acted really well😭 there's absolutely nothing here showing off his acting capability?? i guess i just don't really understand what everyone was hyping him up for, i mean apparently they stopped shooting this shit because the director wanted him so badly and he wasn't free. all that for a role that could've been played by.....2010s Santhanam? what??💀 im actually so lost. i can't think of a single scene that required him to actually act. he was simply just a tool to hype up Rajini and be pretty annoying.
out of a lot of the recent Rajini movies, this had the most potential, and i believe it would've worked under a different star, but sadly this is a fail in my books.
based on this review it seems like the rating should really be lower but i really did think some sequences within each "mini-movie" were great, and Anirudh cooked. also the final scene was cool and I'm a sucker for good send-offs.
