Does ‘Bambi’ know he’s called ‘Bambi’?
The thing I am going to miss about Cineworld Renfrew Street is the weird movies they play at 10am in the morning. I watched this without any context, not even a trailer or clip, just the title and when it was on (It was this or ‘Snow White’).
I don’t know how to judge this. I would as a nature documentary but the credits say it’s based on a book?. So is it a narrative film then?.
It consists of filming of a real deer, called “Bambi”, by the narrator, through his journey through life from his first day alive until he is 4 years old and fathers a son. For what I can tell it’s mostly real life animals with some bits of digital fakery throughout (mostly compositing). So was it all real?, or were the animals essentially forced into performing a narrative involving harmful traps, death, and chases. I want to know if Bambi’s real life mother was killed for the making of this movie as an emotional drive for ‘Bambi’. Is ‘Bambi’ the deer okay with that?. Did they artificially unleash an army of dogs to chase onto deer for the sake of this movie?. Is it ethical to artificially create distressful situations for real life wild animals?. Am I too woke?. Is that crow trained then?.
Maybe I should let my intrusive thoughts shut up for a moment. Again, I know nothing about the making of this movie. Maybe it’s all really good CGI?.
I gotta admit though. There’s something so compelling about animals and how they communicate with each other. Animals are more interesting emoters than humans. There’s something so filmic about their no words communication. It’s why I loved ‘Flow’ so much.
There’s some beautiful cinematography and visuals. Of course, it’s mostly nature. Working with real life animals must be a pain on any filmmaker, the fact this works so well is a massive achievement.
