a lot of people praise the way directors manage to condense time and make a long period of time feel short through entertainment. of course i can appreciate this too, like Heat (1995) or Love Exposure (2008).
but i think it’s much harder to make a film feel longer than its runtime, in the sense that the impact on the audience is much greater than the short runtime would suggest. weerasethakul does this so well here, and in his feature Uncle Boonmee Who Can Recall His Past Lives (2010). Malick also does this really well like in some of the shorter cuts of his films.
