This had my eyes glued to the screen. I couldn’t believe what I was watching. This is totally unlike any other documentary I’ve seen.
It’s insane how Huie just seems to sing his sermon. It’s genuinely shocking when you realize he’s just doing that. I think he had some interesting ideas at first before he devolved into just about every other preacher.
I want to think about what Herzog is trying to communicate with the long shots of the broken down neighborhoods. Is he trying to say that the people in attendance at Huie’s church come from those neighborhoods? Has Huie taken all of their money in order to make this megachurch? How else would he pay for an elevated baptism pool with a glass window for the congregation below to look up at?
It’s genuinely insane where this sermon goes. It begins with some very interesting thoughts before becoming nonsense. What a performance. I can’t help but think that knowing that a camera was in the building made Huie go even harder than he normally did. I can’t believe everyone in that church ate up every word he said. It’s just insane to see this as a non religious person.
All that being said, I expected more from this than just watching a sermon. It definitely scratched an itch for me but I REALLY wanted to hear Herzog’s thoughts on this. Oh well.
