Dark and quirky Australian drama about finding shelter from grief (and extreme forrest climate) through male bonding.
Local copper Dan (Phoenix Raei) struggles with his grief after finding the body of his school friend Steve (Rhys Mitchell). Given administrative leave from the force, he takes to the forrest where he meets an eccentric and (initially) unwelcoming hermit (Hugo Weaving).
The Rooster carries a morose and dark tone and what levity there is, always feels clouded with unspoken trauma. Weaving is strong (as he always is), giving a solid depiction of those that exist at the fringe of humanity. There are moments where it felt a bit like one of those back to nature masculinity retreats, albeit without the overt alpha bullshit.
Decent, but grim.
