The Family Star had an intersting idea, but that’s about it. I thought the first half was alright, not that bad but the moment the second half starts the film failed for me heavily. It didn’t even feel novel after a point. VD & Mrunal were the only ray of hope in the film for me.
This was VD’s career best looks in my opinion. Man, he was so freaking handsome in this film. Although I can see the complaints some people have with his dialogue modulation, for me it just seemed like normal VD. Nothing spectacular, but nothing terrible either. Mrunal barely spoke which honestly annoyed me, but thank god she’s such an awesome actress cause at least she was able to carry her poorly written role to some extent with her expressions. Parasuram is such a frustrating filmmaker. His hypocrisy in his writing is genuinely confusing. The amount of “HUH” moments I had in this was so annoying. I don’t even mean in terms of individual scenes, just from a pure character & dialogue writing standpoint it was so infuriating. Again, I thought the first half honestly was going pretty fine for the most part, no where near as horrible as some people made it seem, but as soon as the second half starts and they go to America, the film misfires on almost nearly all levels. This film could’ve been so much more and a genuine family entertainer if Parusuram knew what he wanted.
The only two things other than VD & Mrunal I liked in the film was “Nadanana” & their costumes. Both of them had some great looks, especially VD. Finally, although I thought the first half was alright, the second half really ruined everything for me. Such a missed opportunity on so many levels.
