starting recognizing how often whodunnits are used to get justice in a roundabout way. just like everyone in the room, the audience is confused at everything happening, waiting for the little breadcrumbs of information the detective or the movie gives us. it was pretty cool in murder on the orient express and entertaining in knives out, but here in a deadly invitation, the breadcrumbing felt like the movie’s only way to keep me interested.
i liked that they played with the detective trope by assigning that role to a murder mystery podcaster, giving her the tools and knowledge to plausibly solve the mystery. however the rest of the cast didn’t have much of a role to play aside from giving a face to the twisty plot, making all of them uninteresting and simply accessories to moving the movie along. there has to be more to a murder mystery than the actual solving to keep it interesting; the thing about using convoluted plots to achieve justice can be a way to add depth to the plot, but here, it just emphasize how flat the story is.
