RIP Wings. A true titan.
This is the man’s crack at directing the neon slime. It has that off-kilter discomfort that comes from a self-indulgent director allowing things to be big and loud, pitched to the rafters. Knockoff Badalamenti score. Every character is dialed up all the way and the dialogue is a plate of the hardest hard boiled and the saltiest ham. Sleazy, gross, goofy. We’re talking crosscutting between bathtub sex, a girl taking a shower, and a girl getting a makeup brush applied tactlessly to her cleavage. I won’t spoil all the details of the sequence but it’s insane.
Of course, the whole thing moves in fits and starts. It’s discursive. The viewer getting a compelling story isn’t really the top priority. The plot is really, really simple and it hits a hard lull going into the third act. There’s more than a little homophobia and misogyny but it’s mostly boneheaded. The villain is maybe not the most interesting character but his snuff by way of b-movies is kinda fun.
Ultimately, I think this is a hoot but maybe start with the more popular neon slime flicks. This is also a late entry so LA feels more recognizable and we’re drifting away from the core aesthetic a little.
