It’s hard to believe that this mess is meant to be part of the same universe as Stree. While I am all for vampires, especially in Indian cinema, Thamma is preternaturally boring and convoluted. The main problem is with the plot writing; it’s so choppy and bland, with a whole host of random ideas thrown into the mix that don’t make sense. The lore behind betaals was only touched on very briefly, which was a shame because it was an opportunity for some great visual storytelling combined with Hindu mythos. They really stretched the story as thin as possible over the two and a half hour run-time, so by the final fight scene I’d checked out long ago. Adding on to that, the VFX was pretty terrible, and the overall cinematography was so dreary. Even the cast couldn’t save this; though I’ll admit I haven’t seen many of Ayushmann Khurrana’s films, I know him to be a great actor, but his performance here was bordering on ridiculous, and the same goes for Nawazuddin Siddiqui. I really don’t think Rashmika is a good actress, and this film doesn’t help in turning the tide in her favour. I don’t know, maybe I’m missing something, because apparently this was a commercial success, but I’m never watching this again.
