There’s a lot of history behind my experience with this movie. It was playing at one or two of my local theaters but only for one week and it was the week I was out of town. For what has felt like forever since then this movie has been on my immediate watchlist, hoping for some kind of slim chance it would come to any of my streaming services. Luckily enough, it came to Mubi yesterday, and tonight I had the privilege of finally watching it. I’m so glad it lived up to my expectations.
It’s an authentic city-life drama with the plot of Paper Moon and the stakes and feel of Uncut Gems. Despite some amateur acting, the movie is all around fast paced and entertaining with light and smooth dialogue. The characters are a nice dynamic to the story that made me care about the plot more. Not to mention to final 30 minutes which had me locked in. Crazy how I went from full-body chills to on the cusp of tears in such a short amount of time.
For an indie debut film shot on 35MM, this is one that definitely knows its limitations and explores what it can within the story and budgetary boundaries. Simon Hacker is a filmmaker you’ll want to keep in mind for future projects.
