I’m being so 💯 this is an amazing fucking movie.
This dialogue-driven plot is reminiscent of the intro to Pulp Fiction with its natural conversation turned spectacular.
Despite being an independent film with a low budget, the team’s the dedication shined. The auntie? Oscar. Original screenplay? Oscar. The soundtrack? Oscar. But hey. Fight club never got an Oscar nom either.
This narrative tackles complex themes such as systemic racism, community structure, social inequality, and mental health. The writers handle each of them in a way that adds to the conversation rather than recycling old stories.
One might be so quick to judge these main characters for their unbridled greed, but this film does an excellent job at showing the character’s the societal pushes towards consumerism and systemic pulls into debt.
With all the praise I could possibly give this movie, its message cannot be topped. The gold chains of consumerism blinds us to real financial freedom. The real pandemic was capitalism.
