The Lie: The Murder of Grace Millane

In my review of Unknown Number: The High School Catfish I asked whether documentaries, especially true crime, should be framed and presented like a thriller. This film is the antidote to that approach; no talking heads, no reenactments, told in a straightforward and sometimes brutal way.

But that's the point, the lie is not only the lie the killer was initially caught on, but the collective lie that was shared across the story that it's her fault, that women who are abused and killed by men are responsible for their deaths. The defense victim blaming and slut shaming, the community posts on reddit (of course) that she brought this on herself. This isn't just one isolated case and the film does an excellent job of elevating above the single case to show the overarching pattern.

Wished they spent the second half focusing on the rates of domestic violence and abuse against women, rather than providing a list at the very end. Feels dismissive to dedicate this documentary to them, only to squeeze them in at the very end.
