complicated thoughts here, all about keith, so:
guy who plays keith either does a banger jack sparrow impression or based his performance off of his wasted photos, either way this is just an observation
probably not all, but i’m just very hyper fixated to this keith performance. have barely stopped thinking about it since finding it’s existence this morning. i really wish there was a fuller version of him here, or at least an accurate one. to me the actor seemed wasted [both ways]. like i stated this felt like a jack sparrow impersonation, not a performance of keith. only small moments vaguely resembled the actual guy. one that sticks out to me a lot is when he showed up at the apartment and said “miss obermaier, lovely dress” because knowing anything about keith is knowing the love and respect he places upon on the women he loves. his respect of women is one of the things that often sets him apart from contemporaries. the story of him wanting to confess his crush to ronnie spector in 1964 is a true testament to this, as instead of making her uncomfortable he simply sat around helping her, respecting her. a quote from the man himself reads “if I'm going to be with a woman, even if just for a day or two, then we've got to have a laugh. and then, if we get around to screwing, that's wonderful. but I've never started a relationship just for the purpose of wham-bam-thank-you-ma'am. chicks are too precious for that. i mean, i love chicks. i love them too much to just roll over and stick it in." this version of keith, the real one in other words, is barely found in this film. it’s just a side of him, a pretty bad one at that. obviously he’s not the focal point of the film, but he is marketed and shown as important to the audience and the protagonist, so it’s confusing to see so little of anything but a caricature.
on this, the last scene with him. bad. very bad and i don’t care what roger ebert says. listen: obviously movies and fiction even when based on real happenings, but unless your bohemian rhapsody you’re somewhat close to the real thing. this scene, from what keith has described of the actual encounter, was just so so wrong. not a mention of patti hansen, just an “im being married soon.” at the time of the film he’d’ve been married nearly 20 odd years, happily, with two kids, proving that this marriage that was so flippantly spoke of was not just nothing. it’s very, very weird. feel the need to bring this up because incredibly tired of this whole thing where no one acknowledges patti when speaking of keith’s love life. like she’s the one that’s kept him clean, happy, and has actually seemed to love and respect him through all his ups and downs, i mean “she is the most beautiful specimen in the WORLD. it
certainly helps but it's her mind, her joy of life, and she thinks this battered junkie is the guy she loves.”. it’s so so out of character for keith to not seem to care in the slightest, when that’s the way he speaks of the woman he would marry, just very very weird.
idk man i’m so tired, i’ve wasted so much of my life on caring about keith richards [8 month hyperfixation woooooo] so it really sucks to see such a bad portrayal of a very interesting person. just expected more, probably my own fault.
also completely conflicted on the drug abuse portrayal. i usually am because i’m huge in the camp of wanting to acknowledge that addictions are illnesses and should not be glamorized. the heroin taking in this film isn’t shown to be glamorous, it’s hard to watch and gritty yes… however it’s paired with a very stylized and long sex scene. it’s like night and day with it. it doesn’t glamorize, i guess, but it’s definitely not as gritty of a portray as other things. not sure. just a lot of thoughts here not really sure how to formulate them
