This is a tricky one to rate because it’s kind of all over the place. Donn Beach-Comber clearly lead a life worthy of documenting and had a massive impact in ways most people don’t know about. The main drag for me is that it runs much longer than it should. Lots of cuts to people talking that don’t add much to the story and don’t have the charisma to make up for it.
The stop motion to animate the interview tapes was a fun decision, and same with the animation which progresses with the time periods.
Also someone at the director Q&A used their “question” to go on a rant about AI and how Donn might think about AI. Dear reader there is absolutely nothing in this documentary that even vaguely warrants this question, so I have to imagine this person was sitting there for 100 minutes seething about their favorite grievance, waiting for a captive audience. (this is also when most people got up to leave)
