Better Call Shahid

Finest Rajkummar Rao performance yet, and what a cast. Rajkummar Rao, Kay Kay Menon, Tigmanshu Dhulia, Mohammed Zeeshan Ayyub, Vipin Sharma, all top class actors delivering phenomenal performances. Mohammed Zeeshan Ayyub is so good as the brother, and Kay Kay Menon, even in a brief role, is amazing as always. Loved spotting the usual Mukesh Chhabra cameo he sneaks into random films. So happy to see legendary actors like these all in one movie. The supporting cast, Prabhleen Sandhu and Baljinder Kaur, also do their jobs well.
The production is great too. Loved the real Bombay locations, which is a rare sight in 2026 where almost everything is shot on soundstages. The courtroom scenes are so nicely staged and shot, they really pull you in.
The story has a lot to cover and does rush through the prominent life events of Shahid Azmi at times, which is not necessarily bad, but the frequent time jumps can feel a bit jarring. Still, I loved the film. If anything, it made me want more. I genuinely wish someone would now make a series that goes deeper into the events and details of his life.

Man that stood against the law served towards the innocents. A thought provoking film that asks you "does terrorism have a religion".
Bollywood's always good in making biographies.

Based on the true story of late activist Shahid Azmi, Shahid is a film exposing the victimisation and religious discrimination and domination, faced by innocent helpless common people of the Muslim minority post-terrorist attacks in Mumbai in 93', '03, '08, etc. 

I believe Bollywood evolving from being constantly ostentatious and pretentious, to making films like Shahid that expose the bitter truth of reality of our society is a bold step in the right direction. This film had me hooked right from the start. Although it does get a bit stretched out at a few instances but nonetheless valuable addition to character development. Rajkummar Rao is as always the remarkable actor that he is, and he's supported by a great supporting cast with the likes of Kay Kay Menon and Vipin Sharma. Everyone looked believable, and the film seems like it made an efficient use of its low budget to make a film larger than its assumed scale.
