The Last Screenwriter has a very interesting concept, and the main actor delivers his lines really well. The cinematography is also quite nice and gives the film a good look. However, the dialogue often lacks emotion, making the characters feel a bit robotic. The story moves too fast, with quick scene changes that leave little time to connect. While the idea is strong, the plot is quite simple and doesn’t have much tension. It’s a unique attempt, but it could have used more depth.

This film was written by AI, so.. I also used AI to write this review. And it just proves that AI can't write a script that has human essence.

However, the dialogue often lacks emotion, making the characters feel a bit robotic. The story moves too fast, with quick scene changes that leave little time to connect. They act in the opening text like this is some achievement that not a single creative idea was put into this script. It’s all “AI”. 

This is a decently shot film, with nice cinematography, I just can’t actually praise anything that because the AI came up with each camera set up (it was directed by a real human being from a script by AI). There was one nice shot showing divide but the AI probably came with that so no praise there. 

The AI generated dialogue makes me want to die. No one talks like a real human. “I wish I could remember what the main character’s name was?”… oh wait I can’t NOT remember it because it’s spoken in every line said by another person. 

And not in a good M Night kind of way. Everything is in the foretext. And the plot is every basic idea of what a black mirror episode is mixed in with a bad blumhouse horror movie. The thing about AI, is it isn’t real it doesn’t know rhythm and time, how we interact. It just lives inside a computer. It can never know our lives. And that’s why it can’t generate any meaningful stories.

Take in comparison, the movie which this movie “echos”, Spike Jonze’s “Her”. That’s an actually good story about a human writer working with AI that finds a new way to be meaningful to me, every time I watch it. And why, basically, because it’s written by a human. A really talented human. And no Ai can generate a “Her”. No line from this movie is engrained in my consciousness like “Her”. No line from this movie can teach me anything good like “Her”. 

I don’t care if this is a meta narrative on AI. Its still part of the problem. Shame on the actors who signed up for this as well. Because I hope AI tries to replace you too and then you’ll know what this movie feels like.

I think my biggest takeaway from this film is that we invented AI that can suck itself off.

The main theme of the film (written by an AI) is that AI can write films really good but people are just better because of our human experiences and emotion. Which is a good message for films to have, however why did an AI have to write it? If the ultimate message of the film is that people need to keep making films to tell our experiences to make compelling film then why is it written by an AI. Btw that theming isn’t even part of the prompt, Chat GPT saw their prompt and added that theme I guess based on all the outcry against AI and AI art. 

The writing is also not good. The prompt shown at the beginning of the film just specifies a plot idea and idk if something happened behind the scenes to add these themes or to specify a required run time but it did not need to be that long. The film is essentially just repeating the conversation where someone is pro-AI and the other character is against it and they just say the same couple talking points. There is also no sub plots or anything else any character is doing so it just feels like a bloated short film. This film could be 30-40 minutes long instead of its 75 minute run time. Just get to the point where he’s asked to have the AI write a blockbuster on its own and then throw in the last 5 minutes or so with a bit of reworking and then boom, same theming and messages and it doesn’t waste our time. The AI in the film also keeps tapping about how they have been fed so much stuff they can simulate complexities into characters to improve them but I guess they forgot to do that for this film. Because every character is the same and the main character’s arc in this film is a full circle basically cuz he starts off thinking AI is bad and ends the film with the same opinion. 

Just a quick note because it isn’t that noteworthy but none of the cinematography editing or even use of sound is interesting in any way. 

I don’t think I’ve ever hated a film so much, I think the funny thing is I wouldn’t feel this way if it wasn’t written by an AI, the score would remain the same and I wouldn’t think it’s any better but I wouldn’t care enough to write this review. It feels so hypocritical as well cuz my scripts are on god dog shit, however at least I have the excuse that I wrote them when I was 16/17. 

I’m gonna end this review with a quote from Jurassic Park that someone else also wrote in their review for this film but it just fits so perfectly i can’t exclude it “your scientists were so busy focusing on the fact that they could do it that they didn’t stop to think whether or not they should” and that perfectly encapsulates my thoughts on this film
