As a species, we should be truly grateful that we get to experience art in the way that we do. Rarely, we find something so memorable it will stay with us for life, forever changing us. This film, this Old Man Junior (2024), is truly one of those things. The sequel to the much beloved film Morbius (2022), Old Man Junior follows the story of Morbius Junior later in life.
As a man, the real Morbius Junior has great dedication to Morbius and continuing its influence, which, whether Morbophile or Morbophobe, is a human quality anyone can appreciate. Most people will strive to put good into the world in their own way, and this is just one example. Old Man Junior embraces the idea that showcasing your passion and care for something is something entertaining, engaging, empowering and something we should never be ashamed of. For what greater thing is there to give, than what you so dearly appreciate yourself? Granting a gift onto others which shines in the light of love, it is a wonderful thing.
The aged Morbius Junior still shows his appreciation for this cause. As an audience we witness as him and Morbin' Mike are attacked by a yet unseen force. They drive away with the Morbaby, keeping him safe. This encapsulates one of the key themes of the film, which is appreciating meaningful things such as the people in your life or the art we experience. Of course, we learn that the attackers are Charles Midvel and a clone of a younger Morbius Junior. This is indeed commentary on how in the modern world we are constantly in witness to the perversion of good in the name of corporate greed. Midvel is the embodiment of this, the force which attacks art, hunts people, just to keep his Midvel brand alive.
The Morbius Junior clone, Clonebius Junior, is an evil take on the well-beloved and great Morbius Junior. Far from the real Morbius Junior's goals of spreading happiness in the world and encouraging us all to do what we love, Clonebius Junior's only goals are what he is told by his superior, Charles Midvel. This is to show the sad way in which we ruin our icons for the purposes of serving business, which happens all too often now. However, both in the scene where he attacks at Charles Midvel and is turned good by the old Morbius Junior, we see that emotion and art will always outlive money and greed, that good will surpass evil.
In the final moments of the film, Clonebius Junior has to confront Charles Midvel. It makes all seem lost, and for a moment we as the audience start to think maybe it isn't all good, perhaps art will die and there are evil forces in the world which are always persistent. Yet, this is false. In a show of appreciation of the connections we make as humans, Clonebius Junior unites in a team with the Morbaby. They manage to defeat Charles Midvel together, showing that all people work at their best together and when we allow us to be helped by the people around us. Then, Clonebius Junior and the Morbaby leave to watch Morbius (2022), showing that art, goodness and true human connection never dies.
