the director came to my school to show the film which I thought was cool.
I honestly liked this. The story of St Maximillian Kolbe is a very inspirational story about staying hopeful and faithful even when it seems impossible. There are some moments when it feels like an Angel Studios movie (derogatory) and leans a little too deep in to the spirituality. Also I wasn’t sure what the point of that scene in the beginning was because I thought that was Kolbe only to find out it wasn’t and that confused me. Although there are choices made in this film I didn’t necessarily like, I thought the way it showed them slowly dying in the prison was very brutal. Along with this, some of the things that happened outside of the cell were very brutal. This doesn’t hold back on showing how bad the Holocaust was and how evil the Nazis really were. Also the emotional beats in this film kind of got me, not to the point of tears but it did make me feel a bit emotional. The dynamic between the characters was great and there was some great acting. Overall, it tells Kolbe’s inspirational story in a good way, but it kind of gets a little unrealistic with the religious aspect, and I say that as a Catholic myself.
