i loved this. although the reveal that the girl’s father was a poacher felt somewhat predictable—mainly because of the emphasis on the toys, which led the audience to wonder what they could possibly be made of besides rhino horn—this was an incredibly beautiful, heartwarming film with a child actor who completely blew me away. what a talent. i have no idea how that child actor was so good; i felt like i was watching real life unfold in a film that was quite stylized, both in its shot choices and the shifting saturation from beginning to end.
(i’m not at all against the film having a stylized look, because the acting and writing made the world feel so raw and real. i would’ve, however, made the first poacher we see a bit less cartoonish. everyone else felt grounded and authentic, but he felt like he belonged in a completely different movie—maybe a much less realistic version of this one, or even a comedy.)
