in blues, sun-j perumal brings us on an honest, critical and soulful journey about the trials and tribulations of a tamil creative in malaysia.
in sun-j’s last movie macai, karnan kanapathy provides a performance that acts as a perfect vessel for the director to convey his themes and winding plot. however i would argue that in blues, karnan’s performance is the plot. truly the spine of this project. his portrayal is commanding and elevates this movie to new heights. assisted brilliantly by the rest of the cast.
in a post, i heard the director talk about how another goal with this project was to encapsulate the beauty of kuala lumpur and i think this movie aces it. the city lives and breathes and is almost a character of its own. the crew romanticizes the city through simple but beautiful shot composition filled with minute details that leave you admiring.
personally, as much as i love jagat and macai this is my favourite among the three films. if you love slowburns, yearning, satire and hopecore, blues is right up your alley.
