Ferrera directed and Michael Mann produced period piece police procedure pilot (fuck - say that three times fast) that pits 60s era Chicago detective Dennis Farina against up and coming wise guy Anthony Denison.
I say procedural but that’s was really just to fit the alliterative aesthetic, Crime Story which aired on NBC for 2 seasons, was one of the first dramas to adopt a continuing season long arc as opposed to ‘one and done’ singular episodes.
This pilot is a good introduction to the cast and concept, backed up with some great 60s tunes, fashion and solid (albeit relatively bloodless) action beats. Farina was born to play this role, having been a legit Chicago police man for 18 years before transitioning into Hollywood where he portrayed at least 29 other law enforcement officers during his time on the silver screen.
In addition to Farina, other familiar faces include David Caruso, Jon Polito, Bill Smitovich and Martin Ferrero (No relation to FerrerA) who utters this out of context banger:
‘You want me to finger somebody? I’ll finger somebody’
