inde navarrette stock: BUY
what a performance. captivating as hell. impossible to look away, perfect execution of a character held hostage. she must be an athlete or something — she had such perfect control of the way she moved and emoted in every scene of this movie, and MAN was that shit working. she's uncanny as hell in this
it's a horror movie so it won't, but i so hope this projects her into superstardom. i now see her tiktoks on my feed and she's so weird gen z unhinged and listens to crystal castles and i'm eating that shit up like it's my job
while inde is clearly standout, the rest of the cast also slaps. i really fucked with michael johnston and ian's performances as well, and whoever the hell was on the other end of that phone (turns out it was curry barker)
curry barker stock: BUY
if there's only one thing you take away from this movie, it's probably "damn, whoever wrote and directed and edited this REALLY understands horror". this thing is terrifying — i was watching through a slit in my hoodie for lowkey most of it — and i'm not even sure there's a single "proper" jumpscare
and by god is the concept so beautifully modern — you gotta respect dunking on incels on the big screen. i love it when young people make art
hopping back to the scares themselves, they're so creative. i haven't seen anything like the unfocused staredown, the taped door reveal, or the reverse movement (but the forward movement in the sleep watching scene did remind me of hereditary, in a great way)
beyond creativity, the scares are just so effective. it musta took weeks off my life each time bear walked back into that house
the comedy's actually funny, too, which is a much needed release every time it's offered
sound design and editing also slaps too. you just gotta applaud curry barker here
ugh and the lighting was so good. and the whole movie just looks good. ugh
square aspect ratio stock: BUY?
i normally roll my eyes at nonstandard aspect ratios. like what are we doing here — our screens are wide, let's not be silly and only paint some parts of them. it's a classless move to use training wheels when you could solve your problems in other ways. it's like using film for film's sake. just use the better tool, man, and become a better craftsman
... but i surprisingly liked its use here, it made the whole thing feel more "stranger things", so i'm eating my words and hat and rethinking that entire opinion
maybe it's just normally tackily executed. or maybe i don't know shit about shit. who knows
droning synth ambient music: BUY
ambient heads stay winning. i was in vibe city from frame 1. shoutout my goats HTDC, who had nothing to do with this movie but deserve a shoutout whenever the opportunity arises
wishing for a billion dollars: BUY
no thoughts head empty beelining for the billy is the type of hustle mentality that nets you regular hookups with a baddie. sigma
as i was leaving the theater, vic and I were wondering aloud whether or not this is better than smile 2, our favorite horror movie in recent memory. i'm still not sure. but obsession is probably already in my hall of fame
go see it
