This one’s real bad, guys! At first, I thought Demme was just having some fun with an otherwise bland movie, but it just keeps getting worse. There isn’t a single good performance to be found, and it may actually be the worst Tim Robbins performance of his career.
I really didn’t like Beloved, but I can understand the arguments for it. It takes an enormous swing, and for me, throws the bat into the stands, hitting me in the face. This movie trips over itself while walking to plate. It’s the kind of bad that is unintentionally hilarious. It’s convoluted and hammy, and just all around dumb. I’d almost recommend you see it just so you can marvel at how the guy who made Silence of the Lambs made the exact opposite kind of crime thriller.
The ending of this film is actually bonkers. It plays out almost exactly like that one Community episode where everyone is conspiring with everyone and the dean can’t keep straight who’s side he’s even on. It’s probably one of Demme’s worst films, but it’s also one of the ones I had the most fun watching. Just terrible.
