Such a admirable little movie with charm to the brim, a movie that strides in it's simplicity and ability to flow just like a storybook, and with such beautiful animation.
Cartoon Saloon again hitting on a cylinders. This is very different from their normal folktale type movies as it is based on a more fairytale type of story of a man on the moon. This movie released in 2012 but someone feels like it was made at least 20 years prior, credited to it's retro animation and ideas your just transported back to a time you never knew, at least someone my age. I just loved the theme of the children and the world needing to moon to sleep soundly, not only did it finally give the moon it's purpose but it set stakes that we didn't technically need here but were absolutely welcome.
I could talk about Moon Man for hours, with very little dialogue given to him he is able to deliver such a deeply human and heartwarming character, obviously not human but is able to give us something nobody else in the movie does, he is an alien yet he understoods and sees the world like it was intended, and as those amazing scenes of him learning and seeing the true beauty of nature it really sinks in.
Now the animation is tricky, first half I loved the mosaic and almost tootsie pop commercial look, the nature was on full display and Moon Man was great too. I will say, while the animators kept the same workload I think the animation took a backstep in the second half, very rare to see but it became like the rugrats or one of those shows at one point and the characters besides Moon were just hard to look at. Don't get me wrong it's still traditional 2d and i'll never truly speak down on it but Cartoon Saloon set a high standard and I just expected better.
All i'll say on the main conflict is that it wasn't really needed, i'm kinda tired of just hating aliens right when they arrive and the whole imperialism themes were just not very needed, not to mention the villain had no redeeming qualities and wasn't exactly intimidating. Although I will say the henchmen made for some funny moments but didn't fully save it for me.
Lastly the music was great and played a huge role in transforming this one into a fairytale. All around a fun little watch and a portal to a time I don't know.
p.s. just found out this isn't really a movie from Cartoon Saloon, kinda just owns it the same way Dreamworks owns the Wallace and Gromit's I guess, so forget what I said comparing them yet this will probably still appear in a ranking list for consistency with my others.
