Max Manus - A bleak slow film
Max Manus is a war-thriller from 2008, and it is a slow-burn, but very tense thriller. And this movie also uses Mise-en-Scene very well, especially in the destroyed ship scene. The color is very smart, like when there is war, it's cold, grey, dark. But after the war, when all of Norway is cheering on Max-Manus and his fellow warriors, it's warm, bright, yellow. Unfortunantaly there is a huge issue with this movie, and that's the sound design.
Even if the movie is very compelling, and shows a unique look on war, the sound design is weak. It's low, it's high. And I have to tone my volume up or down based on where i am in the movie.
The set design is also, very authentic, especially with Stortinget. (Norway's parliament) Here they took up the nazi flag, and the text "Deutschland siegt auf allen Fronten" just like in WWII, I bet some people got flashbacks.
Overall? 8/10, recommended, butv you have to be patient.
