Early cinema is complicated. I personally find it incredible because it represents Art without boundaries. However it also represents the beginning of understanding of what film is. This film doesn’t fully understand the best way to tell its story and it shows. However, techniques that could improve the storytelling were in their infancy at this point and considering this was directed by a woman in 1916, I can understand why this film isn’t as technically polished as it should be. It’s a shame because the story is good.
