I always appreciate Stuart Gordon’s mean-spiritedness, but this weirdly ended up being more of a shrug of the shoulders than I expected. Meeting the movie on its own midnight terms only works about half the time, and I started to long for racist William H. Macy’s crazed subway rantings after a certain point.
Out of the four Gordon pictures I’ve now seen (Re-Animator, From Beyond and Edmond being the others), this is easily the least unhinged and satisfying, but there’s still enough good practical makeup and dark humor to make this worth one watch.
