MAMA MO KALBO. 👩🦲
After Issa kills their abusive father, she and her younger brother Tomas flee their home. They eventually find what they think is a safe haven—a secluded orphanage run by a group of strict nuns. While hiding from the police, Issa and Tomas realize the orphanage is not a sanctuary at all. Instead, it is the home of a dark religious cult that worships a terrifying entity.
Lilim is a movie that looks and sounds like a masterpiece, but it struggles HARD to be one. While it is clearly well-crafted, watching it can be a bit of a chore. It is just VERY SLOW. There are long stretches where the plot doesn't move forward, and it often feels like the movie is stalling rather than building tension.
The story itself feels very cliché. We have seen the "creepy nun" and "hidden religious cult" tropes many times before. Even the twists, feel predictable and bland like the script didn't even try.
That said, the technical side of the film is what I liked most. The cinematography is fantastic, using a dull color palette of browns and whites that makes Issa’s red clothing stand out. The musical score also does a great job of being creepy and dark, even when the story is lagging.
Ultimately, Lilim is a movie that values style over substance. Magaling ang pagkakagawa, ngunit masyadong mabagal at boring ang kwento para masabing maganda. Sa huli, sana mas pinaliwanag pa ang mga lihim kaysa itago ito upang mas maging kapaniwala-paniwala ang storya.
