If the Oscars had been created four years prior, both Belle Bennett and Stella Dallas would have become the first Best Actress and Best Outstanding Picture winners respectively. Bennett displays a wide range of emotions and fills every scene with such depth it is hard, if not impossible, not to bring tears to your eyes every time she makes a decision that deprives her from her own dignity and pride. I’ll try to get to the 1937 talkie version but I don’t think it will be as moving.
