Documentaries that follow exceptionally talented young people have exploded ever since the success of “Boys State” back in 2020. If there is a competition out there, camera crews are likely trying to find a way to capture it. So much so that they even made their way to the Excel World Championship.
Knowing little about the competition & being a daily user of Excel, I was actually pretty curious about the competition. While the film does a decent job show casing some of the participants, the competition itself isn’t cinematic enough for a documentary. The filmmakers go to no lengths to show much of how the test works which leaves you just watching some anxious kids poke away at a keyboard. The only real tension is when a computer crashes for one of the participants. Other than that it’s just a lot of talk about how hard the exam is without ever showing how hard it is.
While I’m always down to watch a story like this, that doesn’t mean that they all work & unfortunately spreadsheet champions doesn’t fully come together.
