Resident Evil
while my resident evil ball knowledge is certainly tenuous at best, i know enough to call myself fan of the series, and to really respect and what they’ve done for horror. again — i don’t really know what i’m talking about — but i see RE as a regular source of innovation in the horror space. they’re devoted to their craft, and pushing the genre forward bit by bit

i’m also kind of a video game truther, in that i see interactive stories as the most powerful form of storytelling. i think this is rarely fully exercised, but i see games as having the most potential as homes for the world’s best stories

there’s just so much you can do with choice

anyway. i digress

this movie was mid as hell. it feels properly dosed with fan service — really, that’s the part i feel but in a fun way — and it’s SO true to what i know of the games, mixing puzzle and “here’s your next quest” and jumpscare and plenty of “nah, fuck that”, openly acknowledged by our MC

it just does a great job of putting “video game logic” moments and over the shoulder POV especially in the car dear lord and that FUCK ASS kinda glossy skin uncanny look they give to that first lady (fml) and that you-know-it-when-you-see-it The Office-esque video game zoom & pan they hit exactly once that made me chuckle and go “yeah that’s a R:E cutscene”

and WOW when she crawls around the upside down cop car that’s the creepiest spiderwalk movement i’ve ever seen

so minus the super duper over the top comedic MC, i actually really liked the first half

but in the second half it stops being scary, and it’s just kind of a comedy gorefest, which doesn’t really land

while i love and respect R:E, it’s brand of slimy tentacle-y gory monster horror feels really generic after a while. you just hit a point where it’s just not interesting. i feel like the guns & generic monster design formula could be tinkered with, but those aspects are also core to the games

there’s a really soft story on top of it all which obviously no one cares about, and some of the encounters drag for a long time

loved the different settings. that’s another area where this shines — so many great locations

anyway. i went into this because it’s zach cregger and RE, but it’s about what i expected. true fans will have fun, most people will find it meh

oh, and some bonus points for an incredible track that played during the title drop

My Hat goes off to Zach Cregger for breathing new life into a dead franchise. The story struck a perfect balance between horror and comedy. The jump scares were well timed and not cheap, I felt like that kid again playing this back on Playstion 1. This has to be the best video game adaptation that I’ve ever seen. The main characters scream was so damn funny, I give Austin Abram’s credit for absolutely carrying this movie on back. Bravo 🧟🧟‍♀️ the many uses of the 1st person shooter shots were so satisfying to see.

he looked like timotee chamalet. for sure the funniest horror movie i’ve seen. not too scary, mostly just jumpscares, agree with @Yonny Sklansky the monsters were really well done. entertaining to see with friends but forgettable imo — perhaps would appreciate it more if i played the games

Resident Evil
Resident evil is the best video game adaptation because instead adapting the game one to one and retelling the 30 year old story people have played for years it basically sucks us into the perspective of a normal guy in the shitiest situation.

Tone:
A big reason why this film works is that it mimics the tone of RE7 and the goofy campiness of RE, the movie does takes its theme seriously but the comedic aspect of Brian literally just being in a shit situation helps puts peoples gaurd down

Lead:
Brian is basically if everyone was put into the scenario of Chris, Jill or Leon because %90 of us isn’t a super cop and like any of them, Brian is just a regular guy put into a shitty situation doing things what us as players in a game would do in his shoes.

Monsters
The original creature designs in this film makes it stand out from the games, they are very unique and different yet they are some of the most resident evil like

Game connection
The story is original in a new timeline with new monsters and infected. The movie celebrates the format of the games mimicking the tone, mood, structure and jokes like the games.

Zachs direction
Zach Cregger has undoubtedly on a roll, barbarian and weapons are two of the best horror movies of the decade and resident evil has surpassed both of them. Many people had doubted his vision and the skepticism with the last 7 movies being the least resident evil movies ever, Zach has made a beautiful film with the absurd monster design that’s very thingest and Forestest with some of the “comedic” parts of the film just essentially things a normal person would say in the situation of Brian.

Final Verdict
Resident evil is a masterclass work with brilliant little nuance from the games making the film feel like your watching a captivating cut scene that would be featured in a resident evil game. Zach Cregger perfectly captures the dark horror tones whilst keeping the campiness of the games which is brilliant, the original story is a great touch having fans of the games hunt for Easter eggs whilst new viewers who have never seen the games experience a taste of what resident evil is, this is definitely my favourite film of the year and was worth the 2 year wait
