I’ve been waiting for this movie for what feels like forever, so finally getting to watch Gantung: Musketeer Code felt surreal. After 8 years (I think?) it’s finally here. Honestly, just seeing it come to life made me really happy even if I had some mixed feelings along the way.
First off, I love KJ in this (and will forever love KJ). There’s this one part during the prom scene where I think he adlibbed and it was genuinely funny. Bront Palarae was in it too and let me just say, he slayed. Like legit slay. He really ate in every scene he appeared in. Also, Ben Amir and Shazia Rozaini gave us a different vibe of Gibbs and Farah. It was interesting and refreshing to see even though personally, I still prefer Farah in the series.
One thing that caught me off guard was the red and green hue in some scenes. It felt kinda strong in some parts. At first I was like what’s going on but then I realized it’s probably used to show flashbacks. Not too sure though.
Now being honest, the movie did feel a bit rushed. I get that they had to squeeze a lot into just two hours so some scenes felt a bit off or confusing. There was one part where I just sat there like ehhh what just happened. It didn’t flow as smoothly as the series which had more time to tell the story.
The script felt a little awkward here and there. Not sure if it was the way it was written or how it was delivered. I do hope they tweak it a bit if there’s a next one. And the audio during my screening wasn’t great. Sometimes it sounded like it was underwater? I don’t know if it was the cinema or the movie itself.
But all that aside, I still enjoyed it because it’s Gantung. I’ve waited so long to see this and it finally happened. I was even on the verge of crying at one point but I was holding in my pee so I couldn’t even cry properly.
If you love the series or the books, go watch it. Just don’t go in with super high expectations. It’s not perfect but it gave me that familiar Gantung feeling. And for that, I’m grateful.
