The Microphones is the most essential indie project of this century.
It Was Hot, We Stayed in the Water (2000) is the ultimate indie folk album about falling in love. featuring some of the greatest drums to have ever blessed my ears.
The Glow Pt. 2 (2001) is an experimental and psychedelic concept album about the aftermath of a devastating break-up. the sheer emotional weight of the songs on this album cannot be overstated. not to mention the beautiful avant-garde production.
Mount Eerie (2003) is the album that picks up where the last album left off and completes the trilogy. but it goes way beyond the scope of the previous albums. it is a piece of art of the highest order. a straight-up spiritual experience that is beyond description. perhaps my favorite album ever made (or at least top 3).
17 years later, Phil returned to the Microphones name to create an album that is a reflection upon his journey as an artist. a musical trip down memory lane. a pure rush of emotion. perhaps not as groundbreaking or artistically significant as his earlier work but still a very very important piece that provides deep insight into Phil's persona. released alongside a video of him flipping through some beautiful, some personal, and some abstract photography.
