I was so lucky to get to see the WORLD PREMIERE of this little film at the River Oaks Theater in Houston. It had been considered lost media for 25 years, after failing to be picked up as a DCOM.
I was really drawn to this because of Shelley Duvall (and to a lesser extent Haylie Duff). If I could say one truly positive thing about this movie, it's that it had a clear message it wanted to share, and no matter how heavy-handed, it delivered that!
I think there's a good nugget of an idea here, but the finished product did not deliver that. I would've loved to see more scenes with Duvall and some exposition about how her character got the magic chest or came to use its powers. The final plot just didn't feel very polished or cohesive.
Still, it was such a cool feeling to sit in a packed theater alongside the director, several cast members, and family and friends of the original cast/crew as they got to see their hard work from a quarter century ago finally get a proper screening. I think that everyone was able to laugh at the corny scenes and writing, even while celebrating the achievement of finally getting this project in front of an audience.
At the Q&A after the film, one of the actresses stated that she had actually NEVER seen the entire film, but that it was the project that made her fall in love with acting. I'm so happy she was finally given this closure to that early chapter in her career.
