A shaggy, strange, utterly genre-less movie that had me totally enraptured start to finish. Meshes Flight of the Doves with John Carney to great effect— only a truly confident filmmaker would make this movie so adult, guarantee a 15 rating, and still end on the main stage at Fleadh Ceoil. Accepts that crusty groups of musicians busking on the streets of Galway are a somewhat insidious type of cult and then abandons that notion in its final moments for a big sesh. Aiden Gillen the best he’s been in years. But the young actors are sensational — real people! I know people like them! Really funny, fast script. Touches on all the elements of trad music I hate but makes a convincing case for embracing the culture nonetheless. And has its leads pitching a tent at Spanish Arch which is ultimately Very For Me.
