the debasing, depraving nature of shame which makes the experience shameful itself is such an interesting concept to me. a bit like a dog which chases its own tail; one is shameful because one feels the need for something; one feels the need for something because one is bereft; and one is bereft because one is shameful. etc etc. it’s a vicious circle. i keep going back to james telling luka that he’s comparing the inside of himself to the outside of other people. isn’t it inevitable that he ends up projecting the abasement he feels re: himself onto the people around him? and is there comfort to be found in this fact? maybe. because if this is the case, then it applies that unlearning such instincts for self-destruction and self-hatred paradoxically insists upon the very opposite and thus by extension upon just how necessary it is to have Faith, the capital-F kind. starting foremost with Faith in other people and/ or Faith in God and/ or Faith in prayer and/ or Faith in papercups. #willemdafoeisjesus #kendricklamarmentioned
