It’s an enjoyable watch, but this is nothing compared to 飲食男女. The characters and story lose a lot of their depth. The relationship dynamic between the dad and second daughter, between the three sisters, all not shown here. Though I did like the changes made to the third daughter’s storyline. Still, it lacks the complexity and emotional warmth that made Ang Lee’s original so special.
I’m afraid the culture isn’t represented well enough here. The shifts in identity, especially for Mexican American women in the US aren’t explored enough like they deserve. Knowing that not even the actors are Mexican American makes it even more disappointing.
