I loved the substance a lot and wanted to check out coralie fargeat’s other work, and going backwards in her small filmography gave some good insight into the progression of fargeat’s directing and style! the cinematography and color grading were very well done, and jen as a character is kind of like the terminator for girls. fargeat does not shy away from beautifully shot grotesque imagery.
with that being said, and maybe this is just my sensitivity to depictions of violence against women and being a bit “too woke” to some degree, but I honestly don’t fully know if I’d consider this a “good for her” film, but maybe that’s the point, I don’t really know. the cynical irony of rape revenge movies is that even when the victim gets her lick, it’s still at the cost of enduring so much suffering to achieve that on top of the catalytic event.
felt a bit conflicted up until the last half hour, where i did find myself thinking “you know what, good for her”. full circle baby
