This “movie” has no idea what it wants to be. Like I think it would be completely different if this 1 hr film had 20 mins setting up why James Franco wanted to do this and then give us the reimagining of the40 mins of cut footage, but instead it’s more about straight people’s uncomfortability with gay sex. And that’s something that I think should be explored, but that’s not what people think they are going to get when they go into this movie.
Overall, I think James Franco had a good heart when he made this, but it just didn’t work out. Like I pretty much completely agreed with him when he was talking to Val half way into the movie about his uncomfortability, but I don’t think that James Franco was the right person to bring this topic forward. Maybe he could have executive produced the film and hired a queer director and actors to be in it.
